New Barna data shows Gen Z leads in weekly in-person church attendance November 15, 2025 | By Kimberly Heatherington, OSV News The first generation of “digital natives”—Gen Z—is surprisingly craving and seeking out real-life, in-person religious experiences, leading a surge in church attendance across Christian churches!
Hey everyone! If you’re a kid, a teen, or an in-betweener, you know what it’s like to live in a world that’s always on. We’re the first generation to grow up with phones, tablets, and the whole internet at our fingertips. We’re “digital natives”—Gen Z—and we’re awesome at clicking, swiping, and scrolling!
But let’s be real. All that screen time can sometimes feel… toxic. Have you ever felt:
- Tired from constantly seeing negative news or endless drama (that’s called doomscrolling)?
- Invisible or unreal because everyone online seems to have a “perfect” life?
- Lost in a sea of opinions where no one agrees on the truth (that’s called relativism)?
If you have, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re experiencing what a lot of people are: a hunger for something real! That’s why the best way to break free from the “digital doomscrolling” is to grab your hope and step into real-life connection.
💡 The Big Surprise: Gen Z is Going to Church!
You might not believe it, but a new study by the Barna Group shows something really cool: Gen Z is actually leading the way in weekly, in-person church attendance!
- We’re going to church more often now than in the past—almost twice a month!
- We’re outpacing older generations in showing up on the weekends.
Why is this happening? When you can watch anything, follow anyone, and create any “truth” you want online, people are starting to crave something real and authentic.
🧐 What We’re Really Looking For:
- Authenticity: We hate fake corporate talk and PR spins. We prefer people who “say it like it is,” which is what many are finding in faith. We want teachings that are genuine and have no room for fakeness.
- Truth: In a world where “whatever truth you want can be your truth,” we’re getting fed up with the lack of stable answers. As one youth ministry founder noticed, people are “finding rest, and answers. Finally, they can just take a breath.” We’re looking for a solid foundation.
- Purpose and Hope: With all the negative headlines, sadness, and anxiety in the world, the “big questions” are changing. It’s no longer just, ‘Does God exist?’ Now, the question is: ‘Is He good? And does He care for me?’We’re recognizing that faith has answers to fight the darkness and fill our lives with purpose and hope.
Even on the internet, this hunger for truth is exploding! People are seeing the influence of digital missionaries like St. Carlo Acutis, a teen who loved video games but used his computer skills to spread the faith online. He proves you can be a digital native and a saint!
Going to church, or any place of worship, gives us that anchor. It’s a physical space to disconnect from the digital noiseand connect with God and a supportive community.
🌳 Your Break from the Screen: Seek Out Real Spaces
You don’t have to live your whole life online. To help you break free from the toxic digital world and find that real connection and hope, you need a daily or frequent break from your routine. Here are three awesome, real-life places to visit:
1. The Church/Place of Worship ⛪
- Why it helps: It offers community, truth, and a weekly chance to hit the reset button on your soul. It’s a physical space where you can pray, reflect, and hear a message that gives you real hope and purpose for the week ahead. It’s the ultimate place for accountability and finding peace away from online pressure.
2. The Park or Nature Trail 🌲
- Why it helps: Nature is the ultimate anti-digital detox! The sights, sounds, and smells of a park are 100% real and unfiltered. Go for a walk, listen to the birds, or just sit and watch the clouds. This is a place where you can feel peaceful, clear your head, and remember there’s a whole beautiful world outside your phone screen.
3. The Library 📚
- Why it helps: A library is a quiet space dedicated to learning, imagination, and real-life focus. Pick up a physical book—the kind with pages you can turn! It’s a great routine breaker. You can find a cozy spot, explore new worlds, or even just study away from the constant notifications. Plus, many libraries have free community events and clubs!
✅ Action Plan: Get Real!
The digital world is a tool, not a home. To find real hope, real purpose, and a real break from the digital noise, you need to step into real spaces.
Challenge yourself this week:
- Schedule it: Pick a day and commit to visiting a church, a park, or a library.
- Unplug: When you are there, put your phone away or switch it to airplane mode. Really experience the space.
- Connect: Say hello to someone, or just quietly observe the world around you. Make a real-life connection with your surroundings or the people nearby.
The fact that Gen Z is leading the charge back to in-person spaces proves we’re all looking for something more. We’re looking for authenticity, truth, and hope. Go find it!
