Future Leaders!

Hey there, future leaders! We talked about being active participants, not just passive observers, and one of the most powerful ways to do that is by going out to vote!

Seriously, I know it might seem like something far off in the future, or maybe even a little boring. But trust me, it’s one of the most important things you can do to make your voice heard and shape the world you want to live in.

Think about it – you care about things, right? Maybe it’s the environment and wanting cleaner air and less pollution. Maybe it’s about having good schools and opportunities for your future career. Maybe it’s about social justice and making sure everyone is treated fairly.

Well, guess what? The people you vote for make decisions about all of those things!

Let’s look at some examples of how your vote can make a difference:

  • Education: Do you want more funding for your schools? Better resources for learning? Politicians you vote for decide on education budgets and policies. Your vote can help elect people who prioritize your education.
  • The Environment: Concerned about climate change? Want to protect natural spaces? Voting for politicians who support environmental regulations and invest in renewable energy can directly impact the air you breathe and the planet you live on.
  • Job Opportunities: Thinking about your future career? The economic policies that elected officials put in place can affect job availability and the types of opportunities that will be around when you graduate.
  • Healthcare: Want access to affordable healthcare? Politicians make decisions about healthcare systems and funding. Your vote can influence who makes those crucial choices.
  • Technology and Innovation: Interested in the future of technology? Government policies can either encourage or hinder innovation. Voting allows you to choose leaders who understand and support progress in these areas.

So, what are the benefits of actually going out and casting your vote?

  • Your Voice Matters: Every single vote counts. It might seem small, but when combined with the votes of others who care about the same things, it creates a powerful wave of change.
  • You Get to Choose Your Future: By voting, you’re actively participating in deciding who makes the laws and policies that will affect your life, your community, and your country. You get a say in shaping your own future.
  • You Hold Politicians Accountable: When politicians know that young people are voting, they are more likely to pay attention to the issues that matter to you. Your vote is a way of telling them what’s important and holding them responsible for their actions.
  • You Contribute to a Better Society: Voting isn’t just about you; it’s about contributing to a better society for everyone. You’re helping to elect leaders who will hopefully work towards the common good.

The ancient Greek philosophers, who laid the foundation for many of our ideas about democracy, understood the importance of active citizenship. As the wise Socrates said: “To know is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge.” This applies to politics too! Don’t just accept what you hear at face value. Be curious, ask questions, and seek deeper understanding before forming your opinions and casting your vote.

Remember that ping pong player we talked about? Going out to vote is like grabbing your paddle and stepping up to the table. It’s your chance to actively participate in the game, to have a real impact, and to show politicians that you are not just a ball to be tossed around. Don’t just believe the politicians’ rhetoric. Enough is enough, voters are being treated like ping pong balls. Let us have the courage to be a ping pong player and play against politicians. Let politicians demonstrate their skills, performance, experience and loyalty to voters to win your vote.

So, as you get closer to voting age, make sure you register. Learn about the candidates and the issues. And most importantly, when the time comes, go out and vote! It’s your power, use it wisely. Your future self will definitely thank you for it.
