Stop the Bots! šŸ¤– AI-Driven Fake News and the Digital War in Ukraine

This article explains how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used as a weapon in conflicts, taking information from the Small Wars Journal study, “AI-Driven Disinformation Campaigns on Twitter (X) in the Russia-Ukraine War.” by Tayyaba Rehan

Ā AI have enabled multiple disinformation methodsĀ that altered global public perception and war narrative formation. AI bots, together with AI-backed accounts, generateĀ artificial propagandaĀ that opposes alternate perspectives and advocates opposing viewpoints.

1. The New War Zone: Your Social Media Feed

Warfare isn’t only fought on the ground anymore; it’s also fought on digital platforms like Twitter (now called X). This is called information warfare, and the target is your mind and what you believe.

The problem? People who want to control the story use AI to create and spread huge amounts of fake news, called disinformation. They use AI to find out what people care about, and then send hyper-focused messages to change their minds about the war and support for Ukraine.

2. Meet the AI Weapons: Bots and Deepfakes

In this digital war, two AI-powered tools are the most dangerous:

AI WeaponWhat It IsHow It Attacks
AI BotsšŸ¤–Fake accounts on social media (like X) run by AI software that act like real users. They are Spies: They analyze millions of posts to find out what makes you angry or happy. They are Propagandists: They automatically post huge amounts of fake tweets and comments 24/7 to push a specific viewpoint. The Numbers: The study found that 60% to 80% of tweets for major war hashtags in early 2022 came from bots!
DeepfakesšŸŽVideos or audio files that use AI to make it look and sound like a real person said or did something they never did.The Big Lie: In 2022, a deepfake video was released showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supposedly telling his troops to surrender. Even though it was quickly proven false, it spread to thousands of people instantly. The Goal: To confuse people and destroy trust in real leaders and news.

3. The Power of Speed and Repetition

Why does this AI-driven disinformation work so well on platforms like X?

  • Fast Spreading: X is built for speed, making it easy for false information to go viral before anyone can check the facts.
  • Hashtag Hijacking: Bots flood popular hashtags (like #UkraineUnderAttack) with their fake content, confusing the public discussion. They even create negative hashtags like #FakeNewsUkraine to make real news look like lies.
  • The “Rule of Three”: Researchers found that if users saw the same false message from different accounts just three times, they were much more likely to believe it was true. This repetition is what AI bots do best, creating a false public consensus (where everyone thinks others believe the lie).

4. How to Be a Digital Detective and Fight Back! šŸ›”ļø

The best defense against AI lies is your own Critical Thinking. You have to become a Digital Detective to protect yourself and others!

  1. Stop and Think! šŸ›‘ If a post makes you feel extremely angry, scared, or excited, pause. That strong emotion is a sign that the message might be designed to trick you.
  2. Check the Source. ā“ Did the story come from a respected news source, or a random, unfamiliar account?
  3. Find the Facts (Rule of Three). āœ… Can you find the same news reported by three different, trustworthy news organizations? If not, it’s probably fake.
  4. Look for the Quirks. šŸ§ If it’s a video (a deepfake), look closely: Does the person’s face look waxy or slightly unnatural? Does the sound cut out or sound “off”?
  5. Don’t Be an Amplifier! šŸ“£ Do not share or retweet information you haven’t confirmed. By sharing, you become an unwilling part of the disinformation campaign.

By questioning what you see online and using your own intelligence, you make yourself immune to the AI’s attacks and protect the truth.
