We live in a world where everything you want to know is just a click away. You don’t have to pay a cent to watch a viral video, join a gaming server, or scroll through a feed. But as the saying goes: “If you aren’t paying for the information with your curiosity and effort, you are paying for it with your autonomy.”
What is Autonomy?
Autonomy is a big word for a simple idea: Being the boss of your own brain. It’s your ability to make your own choices based on your own values. When you stop questioning what you see online, you hand over the remote control of your mind to someone else—often an algorithm or, in dangerous cases, a recruiter.
The “Hidden Trap”: How Extremist Groups Use Social Media

Extremist groups—people who want to trick others into supporting hateful or violent ideas—don’t start by showing you scary things. They often hide behind professional-looking “independent news” channels or “grassroots journalist” groups.
To catch your attention, they use a Digital Recruitment Funnel. Think of a funnel: it starts very wide to catch as many people as possible, and then it gets narrower and narrower as it pulls you deeper into their world.
Phase 1: The Hook (Mainstream Apps)
Recruiters look for people with a knowledge gap (people searching for answers) or a “need to belong.” They might find you on TikTok, Instagram, or a public gaming lobby.
- The Trick: They use “edgy” humor, memes, or high-energy videos that complain about things you might be frustrated with—like school, feeling lonely, or things that seem unfair in the world.
- The Manipulation: They pretend to be a “friend” or a “truth-teller” who finally understands you. They make you feel like you are finally part of the “in-group.”
Phase 2: The Grooming (Private Chats)
Once you’ve liked a few of their posts or commented, they’ll ask you to join a “private” group on Discord, Telegram, or an encrypted app where they say the “real” talk happens.
- The Trick: “political alienation or economic instability“ They give you tons of attention and status, telling you that you’re part of an elite group of people who are “awake” while everyone else is “asleep.”
- The Manipulation: They start to isolate you. They might say, “Your parents and teachers don’t want you to know the real truth, but we do.” They want you to trust only them.
Phase 3: The Indoctrination (Individuality Loss)
This is where they fill your knowledge gap with their own “facts” and extreme views.
- The Trick: They use deepfake videos, “hidden history,” or edited clips to prove that a certain group of people is your enemy or that violence is the only answer.
- The Manipulation: You stop thinking for yourself because they have given you a pre-packaged set of answers for everything. You start to lose what makes you you.
Real vs. Fake: How to Spot the Difference
It can be hard to tell a real independent journalist from a group trying to recruit you into an extremist framework. Use this comparison to stay sharp:
| Real Grassroots Journalism | Digital Recruitment Group |
| Goal: To inform you about facts. | Goal: To make you angry or scared. |
| Sources: Lists where they got their info. | Sources: “Trust me” or “Secret sources.” |
| Tone: Calm and investigative. | Tone: Aggressive, “Us vs. Them.” |
| Mistakes: Admits when they get a fact wrong. | Mistakes: Never admits error; blames “enemies.” |
Why Curiosity is Your Superpower
Scholars have been warning us about this for a long time. They want you to remember that thinking is work, and if you don’t do the work, someone else will do it for you.
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence.” — Albert Einstein
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” — Aristotle
This means you can hear an idea, look at it from all sides, and then decide: “Nope, that’s not for me.” You don’t have to swallow everything you’re fed just because it looks like “news.”
Conclusion: Don’t Be a Digital Puppet
Extremist groups and shady “news” accounts want you to be a passive consumer—someone who just sits back and lets the information wash over them. Why? Because passive people are easy to control.
By using your curiosity, checking who is behind the camera, and being brave enough to disagree with a loud crowd, you keep your autonomy. You stay the leader of your own life.
