Alex was sitting in the middle of a bright, sunny garden. Bumblebees buzzed like tiny helicopters over colorful flowers, and the air smelled like warm dirt and sweet roses. Alex was the Garden Master today! Their job? To plant some bright red tomato seeds.
Playing nearby was Buster, Alex’s happy, floppy-eared dog. Woof! Buster chased his tail, then a bouncy red ball, then sniffed enthusiately at a wiggly worm.
Inside Alex’s head lived Sparky. Sparky wasn’t a person, but Alex’s very own brain! Sparky was super smart and fast, like a little lightning bolt, always zooming with ideas. Alex was the Master, teaching Sparky how to be the best brain helper ever. Sometimes, though, Sparky got so excited about everything that it was hard to stick to just one thing.
“Okay, Sparky,” Alex thought, feeling like a wise teacher. “Our mission is planting these tomato seeds. Focus!”
Alex picked up a small shovel. “First, we dig a little hole,” Alex instructed Sparky.
Sparky zoomed in on the shovel. “Digging! Yes! Dirt! Worms! Look, Buster found a worm! Is it juicy? Can we-“
“Whoa there, Sparky!” Alex interrupted gently. “Buster and the worm are interesting, but remember our mission? Tomato seeds.” Switching focus was tricky for Sparky.
Suddenly, Buster dropped his ball, and it bounced boing, boing, boing right past Alex!
“BALL!” Sparky fizzed. “Red ball! Shiny! Let’s think about balls! Round things! Planets! Space! Can we build a rocket ship after this?”
Alex sighed. Sparky was zooming off track again. It was time for the Master to teach the Student a special trick for switching jobs smoothly. It was called the ACTION Plan!
“Okay, Sparky,” Alex thought calmly. “Let’s use our ACTION Plan. It helps us switch jobs or get back on track when we get zoomed away.”
A is for Assessment! “First, Sparky,” Alex instructed, “let’s Assess. What just happened? Where did our focus go?” Sparky thought back. “Uh… Buster! Ball! Rocket ships!” “Exactly!” said Alex. “We got distracted by the bouncy ball. And what were we trying to do?” “Plant seeds!” Sparky remembered. “Good assessment, Sparky!” Alex praised.
C is for Choose! “Now,” Alex continued, “Choose. We know we got distracted. What do we choose to do now? Do we keep thinking about rockets, or do we go back to the seeds for now?” Sparky bounced. “Choose the seeds! Tomato mission!” “Excellent choice, my brainy student!” Alex thought.
T is for Try! “Alright, Sparky,” Alex said. “Time to Try. Let’s try picking up the shovel again. Let’s try digging that small hole, just like we planned.” Alex focused hard, guiding Sparky. They picked up the shovel. They pushed it into the soft dirt. Scrunch. A small hole appeared! “We did it!” Sparky buzzed, proud.
Just then, Mom called from the window, “Alex! Time to come wash your hands for a snack!”
Uh oh! A new task! Time to switch again.
“Okay, Sparky,” Alex thought. “New mission: Snack Time! Let’s use ACTION to switch smoothly.”
- (A) Assess: “Mom called for a snack. Our current job (planting) needs to pause.”
- (C) Choose: “We choose to stop gardening and go inside for a snack.”
- (T) Try: “Let’s try putting the shovel down carefully and walking to the house.”
Alex put the shovel by the little bag of seeds and walked towards the house, Buster trotting alongside.
After a yummy snack of apple slices, Alex came back outside. Buster immediately grabbed his squeaky toy. Squeak, Squeak!
“Okay, Sparky,” Alex, the Garden Master, announced. “Snack complete. Time to switch back to our Tomato Mission!”
I is for Integrate! “Now we Integrate, Sparky,” Alex explained. “This means we make switching tasks part of our normal routine. We practiced switching away from gardening for snack time using ACTION. Now we use it to switch back. We’re integrating ‘switching’ into our day!”
- (A) Assess: “We finished our snack. What were we doing in the garden before?” Sparky recalled, “Tomato Mission!”
- (C) Choose: “Let’s choose to finish planting those seeds.”
- (T) Try: “Let’s try finding our spot and the shovel again.”
Alex found the little hole, the shovel, and the seed packet.
O is for Observe! Alex carefully dropped two tiny seeds into the hole and covered them gently with dirt. “Now we Observe, Sparky,” Alex instructed. “How did using the ACTION plan feel? Was it easier to switch to snack time and then come back?” Sparky felt calmer, less jumbled. “Yes! We knew what was happening! We chose what to do! We tried it, and it worked! We switched and came back! We planted seeds!”
N is for Never Give Up! Just then, a bright blue butterfly fluttered past. Buster barked playfully and chased it around a rose bush. “BUTTERFLY!” Sparky fizzed automatically, starting to zoom. Alex smiled. “Ah, see Sparky? Distractions and new things always happen! But now we have our ACTION Plan. It takes practice, and sometimes we’ll forget, but we Never Give Up! We just keep trying the steps. A-C-T-I-O-N!”
Alex patted the soil where the seeds were hidden. Sparky settled down, feeling proud. They had started a task, switched to another, and switched back again, all thanks to the Master’s ACTION plan. Buster finally caught his breath, wagging his tail near Alex’s feet. The sun shone, the garden smelled wonderful, and Alex, the Garden Master, knew they and Sparky, the amazing Brain Trainee, could handle whatever task came next, one ACTION step at a time.
