The 7 Steps of Information “Footwork” 👣

Stop being a “static target” for misinformation. 🎯 In both Political Science and Kung Fu, if you don’t move, you lose. 🥋

To navigate today’s polarized news narratives, we can use the Seven Star Step (Qi Xing Bu)—the ancient martial art of agility—as a framework for critical thinking.

The 7 Steps of Information “Footwork” 👣

  1. The Lead 📍 – Identify the thesis. Treat every headline as a hypothesis, not a fact.
  2. The Advance 👊 – “Steel-man” the opposition. Understand their strongest argument before critiquing it.
  3. The Retreat 🔙 – Create distance. When a post triggers you, step back to check the source and data.
  4. The Lateral Shift ↔️ – Move off-axis. Read how other countries or disciplines are reporting the same event.
  5. The Cross-Over 🔄 – Look deeper. Switch from a “political” lens to an economic or historical one.
  6. The Covering Step 🛡️ – Protect your center. Filter out logical fallacies and emotional bait.
  7. The Pivot 🌪️ – Zoom out. How does this news fit into the 50-year historical arc?

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” — Albert Einstein 🧠

In academia and politics, intellectual mobility is your greatest weapon. Don’t just scroll—engage with the agility of a master. 🎓✨
