What “gear” is your mindset in today?

In an age of digital noise and political microtargeting, it is easy to feel like an object being acted upon. Using massive data sets, campaigns “whisper” tailored messages into your ear, designed to trigger your specific fears or biases.

As Newton’s Third Law (FA=−FB) reminds us, for every external force pushing us toward a pre-packaged opinion, we must exert an equal and opposite force of Critical Thinking.

As Swami Chidananda powerfully puts it:

“Essentially, each seeker should know ‘What am I aspiring for? Is my aspiration being fouled by the occasional reverse gear—if not frequent reverse gears or a permanent inbuilt reverse gear—or am I totally out of gear?’ All the calls of the Gita to Arjuna are to stand up and shake off weakness. ‘Strive’ is what all the scriptures say.” ⚙️

This is the ultimate audit for our autonomy in a world of invasive advertising:

  • In Gear: You recognize the “why” behind the ads you see. Your actions align with your reason (Logos) and your true goals.
  • In Reverse: You are allowing “dark ads” and emotional nudges to pull you into polarization and reactive habits.
  • Out of Gear: You are idling—passively consuming your feed and letting the algorithm decide your reality.

Don’t let a political machine or a data broker decide your direction. Like Arjuna on the battlefield, the call is to shake off the weakness of passive consumption. Strive to stay in gear, look beyond the echo chamber, and reclaim your path.
