🧠 The Psychology of Performance: Mastering Momentum and Coping

“A change in cognition, affect, physiology, and behavior caused by an event or series of events that will result in a commensurate shift in performance and competitive outcome and can be either positive or negative.” – Jim Taylor & Andrew Demick, defining momentum in sports in “A multidimensional model of momentum in sports.” 🚀

This quote perfectly captures the dynamic, fluid nature of competitive performance. It’s not just about physical skill; it’s about the psychological chain reaction an event triggers! 🤯

The Critical Role of Coping and Letting Go of Ego

Research consistently highlights how critical the mental game is:

  • The Multidimensional Model of Momentum recognizes that performance shifts—the positive and negative streaks—are fundamentally rooted in our thoughts, feelings, and actions.
  • When facing adversity, elite athletes report “greater motivational changes after failure.” This shows the unique psychological demand in sport to immediately re-engage.
  • In contrast, performing artists emphasize “letting ego go in an attempt to improve performance,” highlighting a powerful universal strategy: true success demands prioritizing growth and learning over defensive self-image.🧘‍♂️

Ultimately, performance mastery lies in effective coping. Lazarus and Folkman defined coping as:

“Constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person.” (Lazarus, R., & Folkman, S, “Stress, appraisal, and coping”)

The right kind of coping is the key to maintaining excellence. As Richard Lazarus noted (in How emotions influence performance in competitive sports), effective coping can “lead athletes to become remotivated and, hereby, capable of attending and concentrating effectively to display their typically high standards of excellence.” ✨

Mastering performance means mastering the internal response to success and failure, and often, that starts with letting go of the ego. What’s your biggest mental hurdle in competition? 👇
