Do you ever get so excited or maybe even a little frustrated that you just blurt out the first thing that comes to your mind? It happens to everyone! But what if there was a secret superpower that could help you become a better friend and a super listener?
It’s called S.L.L.S. and it’s a special trick to help you pause and think before you speak.
S is for Stop. When you’re in a conversation, especially one that’s a little tricky, try to stop and not say the first thing you think of. Take a little break, even just for a few seconds.
L is for Look. Look at the person you’re talking to. What are they doing with their hands or face? Are they smiling? Do they look sad? Paying attention to their body language helps you understand how they’re feeling.
L is for Listen. Really, truly listen to what the other person is saying. Sometimes we’re so busy thinking about what we want to say next that we don’t hear their words. Listen to their whole message before you respond.
S is for Smell. Okay, so Mr. Stephen Messenger, who came up with this idea, said that “smell” isn’t a super helpful part of conversations. But it’s a good way to remember the whole trick! Maybe you can think of it as “Smell the flowers” to help you calm down and take your time.
After you’ve done all that, you can respond with a great answer that shows you were really paying attention. It’s not easy, but practicing your S.L.L.S. skills can help you have more thoughtful conversations and be an amazing friend!
