🧐 Engagement Bait 101: How Influencers Trick You into Clicking

You see it every day:

  • “Like this post if you agree!”
  • “Comment your favorite emoji to show support! šŸ–¤”
  • “Tag a friend who isĀ totallyĀ a loser like this!”

You probably click without thinking. That is the goal. It’s called Engagement Bait, and it’s the main fuel for those miserable comforters we talked about.

Engagement bait is when a creator uses cheap tricks to force you to interact (like, comment, share) just so the platform’s algorithm thinks their content is popular.

The Cycle of the Toxic Creator:

  1. Toxic Post:Ā They drop a super dramatic, over-the-top, or angry video judging someone else. (Because drama is easy views).
  2. Bait:Ā They explicitly ask you to comment a specific word or tag someone to “prove” you agree.
  3. Boost:Ā The algorithm sees all those comments and thinks the post is important, showing it toĀ thousandsĀ more people.
  4. $$$:Ā The creator gets higher metrics, which leads to better ad deals and a bigger platform for more toxic content.

It’s a manipulation loop. You become part of their business plan without getting anything helpful in return. You’re giving them free labor (engagement) for their toxic brand.

šŸ’” Quick Tip: Real value doesn’t beg for a like. Posts that genuinely inform, make you think, or make you laugh will get engagement naturally. If a post has to demand your reaction, it’s probably a trap.

Quiz Time! React with an emoji: šŸ‘ if you’ve unfollowed a “miserable comforter” this week. šŸ¤” if you’re now seeing engagement bait everywhere
